How to Stay Motivated in Your Job Search

Job hunts can start off with a great deal of enthusiasm. As important as it is though, optimism can become elusive. Time passes and the search goes on, and on. Search motivation can begin to falter. Here are some things you can do to ensure that you maintain your motivation.

Have a Daily Routine

Establishing a consistent routine every day is an essential element of staying motivated. Wake up at the same time every morning and perform your morning routine just as if you're going to work, because you are. Eat breakfast, get ready for the day, and sit down to hit your job search tasks. Doing these things at a designated time every day will help you to feel less anxious and more confident.

Set Goals That Are Specific and Measurable

It’s easy to fall into a slump when you’re in the middle of a job hunt that seems as if it will never end. Making specific goals is essential for helping you stay on top of everything that you need to do. However, make sure that your goals are measurable, so that you can track your progress. This will help you to feel confident that you’re making progress throughout the search.

List Your Life Achievements

While you may be feeling down about your current circumstances, it’s important to remember the achievements you’ve made in your career and your life so far. Not only will this help you to feel more confident, but it will also help you identify those achievements in resumes, cover letters, and in job interviews. Review your accomplishments whenever you need a pick-me-up.

Take Time Off

Don’t be afraid or feel guilty over taking time off. When you first start to notice that you’re having trouble staying motivated in your job search, take some time off — before you actually start losing momentum. Renewal is an important way to get back on track. Build small moments of renewal into each day — whether they be short meditation sessions or brisk walks.

Keep a Positive Mindset

In the thick of a job hunt, your job search enthusiasm can waver. Before this happens, you should have ways to remind yourself to do some things that will help you to stay positive, because you might not think of it when you're down. Remembering what you're most thankful for, and earning the thanks of others are two ways to do that.

Stay Connected

So much of your job search keeps you at home all day, which can be be its own source of stress. Whatever you can do to get out of the house will help more than you might think. Call a friend or mentor. And whatever you do, don’t stop networking with others on your chosen career path.

Acknowledge Your Job Search Accomplishments

Unfortunately, it's easier to remember what you haven't done than it is to remember what you've done. Look back at everything you’ve achieved to make it this far in your search. This will recharge your confidence and it can help you to see fallbacks as temporary. It’s also a useful way to reinforce where you would like to go in the future.

Know You’re Not Alone

Many people have been in this situation and understand what it's like to be between jobs. Talk to your friends and family about what you’re going through. Odds are they’ve been through a similar situation and may be able to help you in some way.

Keeping your motivation all the way through a job search may not always be easy. However, these few things can help you stay enthusiastic, productive, and positive. Keep your routine, stick to your goals, hold tight to your planner, and keep space open for friends and renewal.
